Friday 4/29

We took a practice interim assessment in class today. Nice work!

Here is this week's extra credit:

Thursday, April 28, 2016

Thursday 4/28

We finished our intro to scientific notation today with the last part of Lesson 13.4.

Homework: Textbook page 709

Wednesday, April 27, 2016

Wednesday 4/27

Today we learned how to use scientific notation to represent both really large and really small numbers in Lesson 13.4. We'll do some more work with scientific notation tomorrow.

Here's a great visualization of the kinds of things for which we'd need scientific notation to measure or count. Notice the base 10 power in the lower right corner?

Homework: Textbook pages 714-715 (#2-4) & page 717 (#2-4)

Tuesday 4/26

Today we finished our look at exponent properties with a look at negative and zero exponents in Lesson 13.3.

This now completes all six of the exponent rules that you need to memorize and be able to use to solve and simplify a variety of problems. You'll find all six in the graphic on this post. Study, study, study; practice, practice, practice!
  • Product Rule of Powers
  • Quotient Rule of Powers
  • Power to a Power Rule
  • Negative Exponent Rule
  • One Rule
  • Zero Rule

Homework: Read page 710; do page 708

Monday 4/25

We worked in MATHia, talked a bit about the timeline for the next several weeks, and reviewed last Thursday's homework in class today.

Friday 4/22

Tough test to close out the week. Nice work, everyone. Enjoy some downtime this weekend; we'll be back at it with powers next week.

If you'd like more time to finish your test, you may come in on Monday before school, during lunch, or after school.

Don't forget that MATHia grades close tonight!

Here is this week's extra credit:

Thursday, April 21, 2016

Thursday 4/21

Today we investigated multiplying and dividing powers in Lesson 13.2. Don't forget to complete any unfinished classwork from today. Problems 2, 3, and 4 were assigned in class.

Tomorrow we'll be taking our Chapters 11 and 12 test. Be sure to study your pre-tests, chapter summaries, and old class work / homework to arrive prepared.

Homework: Textbook pages 700-701

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Wednesday 4/20

We learned about powers and exponents today in Lesson 13.1.

Homework: Textbook page 692

Tuesday, April 19, 2016

Tuesday 4/19

Many of us were away today performing at Knott's Berry Farm with band, orchestra, or choir. Those that remained worked on MATHia.

Have you met your goals for the week?

Monday 4/18

We took Common Assessment #5 in class today, then worked in MATHia afterwards.

Thursday, April 14, 2016

Thursday 4/14

Today you finished up our look at systems of linear equations with Lesson 12.2.

We'll put your new knowledge and skills to the test on Common Assessment #5 on Monday. Don't forget to put in a little extra time studying over the next few days.

Homework: Textbook pages 659-661

Wednesday, April 13, 2016

Wednesday 4/13

I was out today, but in my absence you finished up Lesson 12.1, further developing your skills in writing systems from a context and solving them using linear combinations.

Homework: Textbook pages 652-654 (#1-4)

Tuesday HW Solutions: Linear Combinations worksheet answer key

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

Tuesday 4/12

We discovered our third and final method to solve systems of linear equations today: solving by using linear combinations (also sometimes called the elimination method) in Lesson 12.1.

It takes a little bit of practice to get this technique down, but I think you'll find it quite helpful to quickly and easily find the solution of a linear system of equations.

Be sure to use the example on page 652 to help you with your homework tonight!

Also, we'll be taking Common Assessment #5 on Monday, April 18th. A study guide has been posted in the Document Locker.

Monday 4/11

Today was a MATHia day for us, the first of this new grading period. I hope you were able to get off to a great start! Progress is available at the link above.

Friday 4/8

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Here is this week's extra credit:

Thursday, April 7, 2016

Thursday 4/7

Today we wrapped up our look at solving systems via substitution with the last of Lesson 11.4.

Tonight's homework is tough, so please be sure to give it your best effort, care, and attention. We want you all to be substitution masters!

Homework: Textbook pages 635-636

Wednesday, April 6, 2016

Wednesday 4/6

We spent another day working with solving systems of linear equations by substitution, this time shifting our attention towards context problems and systems that model them with Lesson 11.3, Problem 3.

Be sure to put in an additional 10 minutes each night studying these new concepts and/or reviewing any homework or class work errors. This is tough stuff and requires extra effort to master.

Homework: Textbook pages 631-632 (#1a-d)

Tuesday, April 5, 2016

Tuesday 4/5

Today we introduced ourselves to a second method to solve systems of linear equations: Substitution!

We're going to be working with this method all week, so you'll have plenty of time to get comfortable with the ins and outs.

Today was a good intro. Tonight's homework will be a good chance to test out your new skills.

Homework: Textbook page 630
